Fecundity

The theme chosen for my final artwork, Fecundity, is the ability to think creative thoughts rapidly and the birth of creative ideas. In the centre of the canvas is a minimalistic figure, which represents me, and there are three butterflies emerging from the top of the head. I wanted to have a contrast of the organic lines used for the figure to the realistic butterflies to make them pop. I wanted the butterflies to be the focus and the first thing that catches the audiences eye because the butterflies represent my fluttering thoughts that emerge in my head.

I believe that I am a person that has many interesting thoughts and beliefs. My mind’s cogs are constantly turning in my head, new thoughts, new ideas, etc. I am motivated to share my thoughts with others to inspire and create happiness. My happiness mostly is influenced by others. I want to share with viewers the representation of my imagination and the moral that inside is what is most important.

I created my art piece by using watercolour and drawing. I used drawing for the figure because I wanted it to look like a nice, flowing, continuous line. First, I sketched out the figure on my paper (I used a feathering technique to ensure it would be easier to erase when drawing my final line). I then used a 0.4 tip Fine Liner to carefully do one whole stroke. I decided midway through that I wanted to add more to the minimalist figure, so I added a pink shadow it areas I felt needed to. Then, using image references, I sketched three butterflies at the top of the figure’s head. Afterwards, I used water colour to add colour to the butterflies. Finally, I used the Fine Liner again to add details to the butterflies wings.

The main concept behind my artwork is representing my favourite animal and my creative mind. Butterflies are very colourful and magical, much like my brain, so I decided it would be great to integrate it into my piece. When a person first meets me, I am quite shy and hide away a bit (the figure being plain represents this). Although, once you get to know me, I have a crazy fluttering mind full of excitement and creative ideas. I thought butterflies fit because they are such an enchanted creature. The title, Fecundity, means “The ability to create many new ideas”. This inspired me because it is the main concept of my artwork.

My goals of the piece were to create a clear contrast between the two elements in the art and to make an eye-catching yet simple artwork (hence why I used the two distinctive techniques). I believe I achieved these goals to a high standard because of the way it was panned out when it came to life.

Overall, I think I have used creativity and I put a lot of effort into designing, planning, and creating my work. I have attempted to include many different techniques into my artwork and I have planned stages of my work to see my thoughts and ideas that lead up to it.
