The artwork of is the perspective of mythical native American creatures that are known to be in legends and myths. It focuses on a small American girl that hopes to gain wisdom and purity from the lightning bird which is known to cleanse evil and lead. As the lighting is travels through the bird and down to the claws to “pass” the leadership, wisdom and purity to the young girl to fulfil her dreams leading. Since this creature is known for wisdom, it further means that the bird and specifically chosen the girl to be purified to be more suitable for leadership.

The child is dressed in cultural warriors clothing that is commonly worn by a man; this can show her determination or imagination. It shows a contrast to her reality since the warriors are larger men and she is young girl. This artwork captures a moment in time with Native American children as they go through a phase of wanting to be successful and lead their tribe into victory. It shows the times where they look up to their leaders or the legendary mythical creatures and are inspired by them. This artwork was created in the modern day and was inspired by Native American culture.

A significant part of their culture comes from legends and myths that may have morals to teach the young whilst providing entertainment. The focal point of the artwork is the lightning bird. The lightning that is striking the bird is part uses the element of line that leads the audience eyes to the main subject of the artwork. The position of the bird on the page is in the centre of the page with vivid colours which allow audiences eyes to be more attracted in that area. The artwork consists of various different visual elements such as line, colour, tone and shape. A specific shape for the bird was used to create an effect that would make the bird appear stronger and more powerful. The sizing also supported this.

Vivid colours of purple, light and dark blue were used to create more symbolic definition in the bird, more mystical and mysterious meaning. These colours have been used in different shapes and tone; they get lighter and darker at certain point of the bird to make the bird’s appearance smoother. Rule of thirds have been incorporated into the artwork as the bird is the centre focus and the spaces around the bird are evenly distributed.

Through this unit I learned many things when trailing and creating my artworks. I gained more knowledge the specific clothing that each native wears. Girls’ clothing would be different to a woman’s or warriors. I have learnt how to blend using colouring pencils. While researching on the different myths and legends I’ve learn the symbolic meanings of colours and the creature along with the morals.
